City of Vacaville issued the following announcement on Dec. 30.
We appreciate and share your concern for our K-9. The dog has been evaluated for injuries by a veterinarian and we have been assured it did not suffer any physical injuries. The dog has been separated from the police officer and is under the care of a canine trainer - outside of the Vacaville Police Department - until the incident review is completed.
A thorough investigation of the incident is underway. The City of Vacaville has retained the services of an independent third-party with expertise in police canine training to participate in the investigation, to ensure an objective review. The investigation will include an evaluation of the officer’s actions, as well as a comprehensive review of the police department’s policies and procedures, and canine training program.
Once the review is complete, the City of Vacaville will take appropriate action - including any necessary discipline and/or training, as well as any needed changes to policies and procedures to ensure the police department’s canine program is in line with industry best practices.
