Congressman John Garamendi, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued a statement on June 3 following the passage of the Iran War Powers Resolution in the House of Representatives. Garamendi said, “Today House Democrats took control and passed the Iran War Powers Resolution to end Trump and Hegseth’s failed war of choice in Iran and rein in this reckless president.”

He continued, “Although Trump campaigned on lower costs and ending foreign wars, since taking office, he has only jacked up the cost of everything from gas to groceries, spent tens of billions in taxpayer dollars, and put American service members in harm’s way.”

Garamendi also said, “After repeated attempts by House Democrats, including introducing my own resolution, the House of Representatives finally voted to end Trump’s failed war. I urge Senate Republicans to find their spine and end the Iran war once and for all.”

The resolution directs the President to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran unless there is a declaration of war or specific authorization for military force by Congress. It allows exceptions for actions necessary to defend against imminent attacks. The vote was described as reaffirming that only Congress can declare war.

John Garamendi is currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district after replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009; he previously served in both chambers of California’s state legislature, according to Congressman Garamendi’s office.
