John Garamendi, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has recently posted a series of updates on his social media regarding the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on local communities.
On November 6, 2025, Garamendi reminded constituents about an upcoming town hall event focused on Proposition 50, the retirement of Representative Pelosi, and the current status of the government shutdown. He wrote: “REMINDER: Townhall Today @6PM PT! Join us for a deep dive on Prop 50, the aftermath + implications of Rep. Pelosi’s retirement, and where things actually stand with the government shutdown right now. Sign up here: https://t.co/N3AXqCz9Bg NOTE: Due to the government shutdown, https://t.co/dJ41wZhsZ0”.
Later that day, Garamendi addressed specific impacts in Contra Costa County related to delayed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the shutdown. In his post from November 6, he stated: “The shutdown is impacting over 100,000 people in Contra Costa as SNAP benefits are delayed. More than half of the County’s CalFresh recipients (58,861) are children and older adults. If you are a CalFresh participant, you can pick up debit cards loaded with two weeks of approved”.
On November 7, Garamendi highlighted concerns about potential flight cutbacks at airports during the shutdown and called for action from national leaders. He wrote: “Is your airport going to have flight cutbacks during the government shutdown? Take a look here. Tell Trump and his Republican Party to open up the government. Stop with the games.
