John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district since 2009, recently addressed several national issues on his Twitter account.
On April 14, 2026, Garamendi commented on U.S. military involvement in Iran and public discourse around it: “Let’s call it what it is: the Iran War. For all the talk from Hegseth and Trump about renaming the Pentagon the ‘Department of War,’ why are they so hesitant to say war out loud? They know the truth- this war is illegal and its sending gas prices soaring.”
The following day, April 15, Garamendi discussed changes to tax filing costs after a government program was discontinued: “Did it cost more to file your taxes this year? If yes, that’s because Americans paid $25B more to file their taxes this year after Trump killed Direct File. Direct File was a free government tax-filing service that Californians and 23 other states could use. 90% of users rated”
Later that same day, he reported legislative progress on aviation safety measures: “The House just passed the bipartisan ALERT Act—a major step to strengthen aviation safety after the tragic collision that took 67 lives. My amendment to close the route that led to this tragedy was also included. We owe it to the victims to protect the traveling public.”
Garamendi has an extensive career in public service; before joining Congress in 2009, he served in both chambers of California’s state legislature between 1974 and 1990. He holds degrees from UC Berkeley and Harvard University and resides in Walnut Grove.
