John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district since 2009, posted several statements on social media in early November 2025 addressing national political figures and recent events.
On November 5, Garamendi criticized former President Donald Trump, writing: “Trump is a bully. Bullying everyone from Speaker Johnson to California and New York. It’s clear: The playground bully has become the dictator.”
The following day, Garamendi reflected on the departure of Nancy Pelosi from her leadership role, stating: “Patti and I will deeply miss working with Nancy Pelosi. For over 40 years, she’s been our dear friend and guiding light. We will miss her. San Francisco will miss her. And everyone who believes in a vibrant, thriving democracy will miss her extraordinary leadership.” This message highlights his long-standing relationship with Pelosi and underscores her impact on both local and national politics.
Later that same day, Garamendi responded to comments made by Trump about Mayor-elect Mamdani, posting: “Trump calling Mayor-elect Mamdani a communist is blatantly false. Trump ordering the federal government to take ownership stakes in companies like Intel is the closest thing to textbook communism we’ve seen in modern U.S. politics. Trump is choosing communism as a way to”
John Garamendi has represented California’s 8th District since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009. Before his congressional service, he was active in state politics as a member of the California State Assembly (1974-1976) and the California State Senate (1976-1990). Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945, Garamendi currently resides in Walnut Grove at age 78. He holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (BA, 1966) and Harvard University (1970).
