John Garamendi, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, recently shared a series of tweets concerning issues related to foreign influence and constitutional provisions. Garamendi, who has been in office since 2009 after succeeding Ellen Tauscher, discussed matters involving former President Donald Trump and potential violations of the Emoluments Clause.
On May 15, 2025, Garamendi tweeted about negotiations involving Trump White House officials and Qataris regarding a plane donation. He stated: “Further reporting shows that Trump White House officials negotiated with the Qataris to ensure that the plane MUST be donated to Trump’s presidential library before the end of Trump’s term.”
In another tweet on the same day, Garamendi referenced concerns held by the framers of the Constitution about foreign influence over office holders. He remarked: “The constitutional framers were explicitly concerned about foreign influence corrupting office holders. FWIW I’m pretty sure the box in question was a lot less expensive than a $400 million ‘sky palace.’”
Additionally, Garamendi addressed inquiries about the Emoluments Clause in his posts. He explained its significance as follows: “What’s the emoluments clause? The Emoluments Clause explicitly forbids office holders to accept a gift from a foreign state without the consent of Congress.”
John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966 with a BA and later earned another degree from Harvard University in 1970.
