John Garamendi, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has posted a series of tweets addressing the ongoing Iran war, the government shutdown involving the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and recent health care policy changes under former President Donald Trump.

On April 6, 2026, Garamendi announced an upcoming virtual townhall for constituents: “Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, I’ll be hosting a virtual townhall at 6pm PT. I’ll answer all your questions on the economic fallout from the Iran war, the ongoing DHS government shutdown, the impacts of Trump’s health care cuts on our community, and more. Look forward to https://t.co/KoIfYI03oD”.

The following day, Garamendi criticized former President Trump’s handling of the conflict in Iran: “The President is simply out of control.” Trump is unraveling as he desperately tries to undo his war of choice in Iran. He is unhinged and must be stopped immediately.” (April 7, 2026).

Later that same day, Garamendi escalated his criticism with another tweet: “The man is crazy. He has a mental problem. He really does…I am always impressed by his ignorance.”
Trump’s too stupid to understand alliances or adversaries. He’s an idiot that should go back to running real estate, not the free world.
(April 7, 2026).

John Garamendi has served in Congress since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009 and previously held positions in both the California State Assembly and Senate. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently residing in Walnut Grove at age 78, Garamendi holds degrees from UC Berkeley and Harvard University.
