John Garamendi, a seasoned member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district since 2009, recently took to social media to express his views on several pressing issues. Known for his long-standing political career, which began in the California State Assembly in 1974 and continued through various roles including the California State Senate until 1990, Garamendi has consistently been vocal about national matters.
On June 17, 2025, Garamendi criticized House Republicans for their vote that he claims would remove health care from millions of Americans. He specifically called out Representatives Valadao and Kiley for their involvement in this decision. “Join me in calling out House Republicans, including Rep. Valadao and Rep. Kiley, who voted to strip health care from 15 million Americans—including their own constituents.”
Later that day, Garamendi addressed what he termed as an abuse of power by former President Trump involving the U.S. Marines detaining a citizen in Los Angeles. Alongside other representatives like Gil Cisneros and Ted Lieu, he demanded accountability for this incident. “Trump using U.S. Marines to detain a U.S. citizen in LA is a dangerous abuse of power and a blatant misuse of our military.”
On June 18, 2025, Garamendi accused Senator Lee of misrepresenting facts regarding legislation affecting public lands in California. He alleged that Trump and the GOP were exploiting these lands to fund tax cuts for billionaires while misleading the public about their actions.“Sen. Lee is lying…Pristine land around Yosemite, the Sierra Nevada, and 16 million acres in California—gone.”
John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 but now resides in Walnut Grove with his family.
