John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district since 2009, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues related to government oversight, labor policy, and international business dealings. Garamendi has a long history in public service, including terms in both the California State Assembly and Senate.
On July 15, 2025, Garamendi expressed concern over recent funding cuts to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), stating “The @USGAO keeps the DoD honest, and I can’t thank them enough for their work. But Republicans just slashed HALF of their funding — a move that will seriously impact our ability to provide oversight and do our jobs.” This statement reflects his view on the importance of GAO’s role in overseeing Department of Defense activities and his criticism of Republican-led budget reductions.
Later that day, Garamendi commented on legislative developments affecting labor policy. He wrote “Republicans and Big Oil just gutted my pro-American workers bill in the middle of the night. But I’m not going to stop fighting for good-paying American jobs. The kind of policies the White House claims to support.” In this post, he accused political opponents and energy industry interests of undermining legislation intended to benefit American workers.
In another post on July 15, Garamendi criticized former President Donald Trump regarding an international business transaction: “Trump’s Qatari plane deal is insane. The corruption is off the charts.” His comment signals concern about alleged impropriety in high-level international deals involving U.S. political figures.
John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. He holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (BA) and Harvard University.
