John Garamendi, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, posted a series of tweets on May 5, 2026, addressing federal spending proposals and energy policy decisions involving former President Donald Trump and his administration.

In a tweet posted at 15:12 UTC, Garamendi criticized Senate Republicans for their request regarding funding for a project associated with Donald Trump: “Senate Republicans just asked for $1 BILLION for Trump’s ball room. Last year, Trump told us it’d only cost $400 million. I opposed it then and I oppose it now. Comment below if you’re sick of Republicans wasting your money on Trump’s vanity projects.”

Later the same day at 17:38 UTC, Garamendi commented on the Trump administration’s approach to offshore wind development and fossil fuel reliance: “The only reason Trump is blocking offshore wind is to keep our reliance tied to Big Oil. Notice his administration isn’t calling offshore oil a national security threat. Trump is using any excuse to kneecap clean energy and stick you with higher bills.”

At 19:10 UTC, Garamendi highlighted legislative efforts related to infrastructure resilience in the Bay Area: “WATCH @CaltransHQ, @MTCBATA and I introduce the ADAPT Assets Act today. The Bay Area is on the front lines or natural disasters and sea level rise. My bill will protect our infrastructure, create good-paying union jobs, and lower long-term costs.”

Garamendi has represented California’s 8th District in Congress since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of the California State Assembly from 1974 to 1976 and served in the California State Senate from 1976 to 1990. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945, Garamendi resides in Walnut Grove and holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (BA) and Harvard University.
