John Garamendi, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, addressed a range of national policy issues in a series of posts on July 25, 2025.
In his first post at 16:21 UTC, Garamendi criticized Republican efforts to reduce funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following recent natural disasters. He stated, “After the Texas floods, the lesson shouldn’t be eliminate FEMA. And yet, Republicans are doing their best to defund the lifesaving agency. Is there no humanity?”
Later that day at 18:12 UTC, Garamendi commented on actions by former President Trump regarding women’s rights and healthcare policies. He wrote, “It’s deeply disturbing how Trump is orchestrating a sweeping assault on women’s rights and bodily autonomy: dismantling long-standing protections, curtailing access to reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare, erasing diversity and equity initiatives, and imposing ideological”.
In an additional post at 19:50 UTC, Garamendi discussed education funding previously withheld by Trump’s administration. He noted that some of these funds were being released to schools across the country. He said, “After months of Trump illegally blocking $7B in education funding, some of that money is finally going where it belongs- our nation’s schools. @NormaTorres and CA Democrats secured +$925 million of that for CA schools. This is a big win for California’s students.”
Garamendi has represented California’s 8th district in Congress since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009 and has also served in both chambers of the California legislature over his career (source). He was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove (source).
