John Garamendi, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, has expressed his concerns on various policy decisions through a series of tweets. As a seasoned politician with decades of experience in both state and federal legislatures, Garamendi offers critical perspectives on current legislative actions.
On May 14, 2025, Garamendi addressed budgetary measures taken by House Republicans, specifically highlighting the potential impact on Medicaid. He stated that “House Republicans, like @RepKiley, are voting for devastating Medicaid cuts in this year’s budget.” He noted that over 25% of Rep. Kiley’s district relies on Medi-Cal, emphasizing the significance of these cuts.
Later that day, he commented on environmental regulations, accusing Republicans of undermining clean air standards. He tweeted that “Republicans voted to take away our right to have clean air.” Accompanying his statement were images depicting San Francisco prior to the implementation of clean air standards.
On May 15, 2025, Garamendi criticized the Trump administration’s stance on birthright citizenship. He remarked that “For over 157 years, birthright citizenship has been reaffirmed time and again by the Constitution.” Expressing concern over potential changes advocated by the administration before the Supreme Court (SCOTUS), he urged for its rejection due to perceived risks to constitutional rights.
John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. He graduated from UC Berkeley and Harvard University before embarking on his political career in California’s state legislature.
