John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has posted a series of statements on his Twitter account criticizing former President Donald Trump and Republican policies.
On May 12, 2026, Garamendi wrote: “Americans are struggling to pay for healthcare, groceries, gas, and housing after Trump and Republicans’ cuts. Now Trump wants to blow $1.2 TRILLION on a “Golden Dome” with no clear details and no real plan.”
The following day, on May 13, he continued his criticism by posting: “Trump is directing his own DOJ to settle his case with the FBI for the tune of $10 billion. Are you not sick of the corruption yet?”
Later that same day, Garamendi addressed Trump’s comments regarding rising gas prices during the Iran war: “Trump said the quiet part out loud when asked how he’s balancing the Iran war with rising gas prices: ‘I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation.’ At least he’s finally being honest. Gas prices are soaring. Inflation just hit its highest level since 2023. Grocery”
Garamendi has served in Congress since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009 and previously held positions in both the California State Assembly and State Senate. He was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove at age 78. Garamendi holds degrees from both the University of California, Berkeley (BA) and Harvard University.
