John Garamendi, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, recently took to social media to express his views on current political issues. Having served since 2009 and with a background in both the California State Assembly and Senate, Garamendi is no stranger to legislative processes and ethical standards.
On May 15, 2025, Garamendi questioned former President Donald Trump’s actions regarding gift approvals in Congress. He stated: “Everybody knows the rules. In Congress, I’m required to get gifts approved by the Congressional Ethics Committee. Why does Trump think he is above the law?”
In another tweet posted moments later, Garamendi highlighted Ben Shapiro’s remarks on Republican reactions to political scandals involving prominent figures. He quoted Shapiro saying: “I think if we switched the names to Hunter Biden and Joe Biden, we’d all be freaking out on the right,” reflecting on perceived partisan responses.
Later that day, Garamendi addressed fellow Congressman David Valadao concerning a bill affecting their constituents. He urged Valadao to reconsider his stance by stating: “Well, I have read the bill @RepDavidValadao. It’s bad for 40% of my constituents and 67% of yours. Do your job!”
Garamendi’s comments underscore ongoing debates within Congress about ethical conduct and legislative responsibility.
