John Garamendi, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has voiced strong criticism of President Trump’s handling of the ongoing conflict with Iran through a series of tweets in late April 2026.
On April 28, Garamendi stated, “Trump’s unauthorized war with Iran is a self-inflicted national security and economic disaster. I’m introducing a War Powers Resolution to end it. Congress decides when we go to war, not a rogue president. We cannot let this conflict continue. There is too much at stake.”
The following day, he continued his criticism by posting, “Trump and Hegseth have been misleading the American people about the war in Iran from the very beginning. Now we’re trapped in yet another endless war. Thank you, Mr. President and Mr. Secretary. This is the mess you’ve created for the American people.” on April 29.
Later that same day, Garamendi reiterated his concerns: “I said what I said: we’re stuck in this quagmire because of your incompetence. We’ve lost 13 servicemembers, gas prices are skyrocketing, and there’s no clear plan to end this war. There is no question about the extraordinary service of our servicemembers. What’s concerning is”.
Garamendi’s public remarks reflect his long-standing involvement in legislative matters related to national security and foreign policy as a member of Congress since 2009 and previously as a member of both the California State Assembly and Senate.
He was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove.
He holds degrees from both UC Berkeley (1966) and Harvard University (1970).
