John Garamendi, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has voiced strong opinions on recent political developments through a series of posts on his official social media account.
On August 11, 2025, Garamendi addressed former President Donald Trump’s intentions regarding Washington D.C., stating: “Trump’s announcement to take over DC is exactly what the founders feared: a wannabe king taking over law enforcement and the military to fulfill a personal vendetta. Trump is not a king. The military cannot be used as a personal police force. We must fight to defend the https://t.co/q6c3ar4pUG”.
The following day, August 12, Garamendi commented on proposed redistricting in Texas with another pointed message: “Let Texas be warned: if you proceed with redistricting, California will do the same. We will fight back. I call on Texas and Donald Trump to stop this gerrymandering madness and focus on serving the country to earn votes instead of stealing them.”
On August 13, Garamendi turned his attention to concerns about women in the armed forces under potential future leadership by Trump and Pete Hegseth: “Women in the military aren’t welcome in Trump and Hegseth’s America. That’s 52% of U.S. Citizens. Before more servicemembers are fired without proper oversight, Americans have the right to know why.”
John Garamendi has had an extensive career in public service prior to his current role in Congress; he served in both chambers of California’s state legislature from 1974 until 1990 and has been active at various levels of government for decades. He was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. Garamendi earned degrees from both the University of California, Berkeley (1966) and Harvard University (1970).
His recent comments reflect ongoing national debates over executive authority, voting rights, and inclusion within the U.S. military.
