John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, posted a series of tweets on October 8, 2025, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s policies and actions regarding healthcare costs, military deployment, and the ongoing government shutdown.
In a tweet published at 16:41 UTC, Garamendi stated, “Healthcare costs are set to double, while Trump gives massive handouts to his billionaire buddies. End the shutdown Trump. Let’s deliver lower costs for the American people.”
Later that day, at 19:39 UTC, he addressed the use of military force in U.S. cities, writing, “I’m appalled and disturbed by the wannabe king once again violating the law and sending the military into another American city. This is not about public safety — it’s about power As Americans, we must all stand up and make clear that Trump is incorrect; our cities are not”
In a subsequent tweet at 20:19 UTC, Garamendi added, “Flights are delayed, air traffic controllers aren’t getting paid, and health insurance costs are doubling — all while billionaires get another tax cut. Trump’s shutdown hursts working families and only helps billionaires.”
John Garamendi has served in Congress since 2009, after succeeding Ellen Tauscher. Before his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, he served in the California State Assembly from 1974 to 1976 and in the California State Senate from 1976 to 1990. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945, Garamendi currently resides in Walnut Grove and holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University.
