John Garamendi, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, recently shared his views on several pressing issues through a series of tweets. Garamendi, who succeeded Ellen Tauscher in 2009 and has a background in both the California State Assembly and Senate, commented on topics ranging from military renaming decisions to humanitarian aid.
On June 4, 2025, Garamendi expressed disapproval regarding the decision by Trump and Hegseth to rename the U.S.S. Harvey Milk. He stated that this action “erases the legacy of trailblazers who fought for equal rights” and criticized its timing during Pride Month as “a desperate attempt to appease a far-right agenda that fears progress.” “It’s an insult to all Americans who value”.
Later that day, Garamendi reiterated his stance against Hegseth’s actions with another tweet, emphasizing the erasure of Harvey Milk from history during Pride Month as regrettable. He remarked, “Hegseth is out of his mind erasing trailblazer and patriot Harvey Milk from history. During Pride month? It’s sad.”
On June 5, 2025, Garamendi turned his attention to international matters, addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He noted that Gazans are still suffering due to insufficient aid and announced his support alongside 92 colleagues urging President Trump to expedite humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Garamendi stated: “We can save lives before it’s too late.”
John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. His educational background includes a BA from the University of California, Berkeley (1966) and further studies at Harvard University (1970).
