John Garamendi, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th District since 2009 and former California State Assembly and Senate member, has recently voiced his opinions through a series of tweets. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945, Garamendi now resides in Walnut Grove. He brings his educational background from the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University to his legislative role.

On April 4, 2025, John Garamendi expressed his support for Outdoor Afro, emphasizing their efforts to reconnect Black communities with nature. He highlights the importance of ensuring that “Access to the outdoors should be for everyone,” emphasizing his office’s commitment to supporting their mission. “It was great to welcome @OutdoorAfro to our office! Their work reconnecting Black communities with nature is inspiring. Access to the outdoors should be for everyone, and we’re proud to support their efforts to make it possible.”

Later that day, Garamendi criticized the dismissal of General Timothy Haugh by former President Trump, attributing the decision to advice from Laura Loomer, whom he described as a “9/11 truther and far-right extremist.” He called the action “disturbing” and urged Republicans to address the issue. “Trump just fired Gen. Timothy Haugh, who led the NSA and U.S. Cyber Command, simply because Laura Loomer—a 9/11 truther and far-right extremist—told him to. This is disturbing, and every single Republican must speak out.”

In a subsequent tweet, Garamendi criticized Trump’s tariffs, suggesting they were harming the economy by inducing a recession, raising prices, and negatively impacting jobs and retirement accounts. He also argued that Republicans’ push for an additional billionaire tax cut would further burden working families for the benefit of the ultra-wealthy. “Trump’s tariffs are pushing us toward a recession—killing jobs, draining retirement accounts, and raising prices. Meanwhile, Republicans want another billionaire tax cut—taking from working families to give to the ultra-wealthy.”
