John Garamendi, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 8th district since 2009, has recently used social media to address issues ranging from maritime revitalization to rising healthcare costs and legislative gridlock.
On October 14, 2025, Garamendi posted about the national maritime industry, stating, “Revitalizing Mare Island and the entire national maritime industry is a win-win for our community. Let’s bring the SHIPS Act to port!” He tagged local media outlets in his message.
Later that day, Garamendi addressed concerns over healthcare premiums for seniors in his district, writing, “Seniors in Contra Costa and Solano Counties (CA-08) could see premiums rise 400% meaning a 60-year-old couple making $85K per year would pay $2,635 per month. This is what we’re fighting against, and it’s more reason for Speaker Johnson to come to the table now!” This statement highlights ongoing debates about healthcare affordability.
The following morning, on October 15, Garamendi referenced ongoing efforts in Congress, posting, “.@HouseDemocrats are back at the Capitol this week to reopen the government and lower healthcare costs. Republicans need to return, stop taking away Americans’ healthcare, and work with us on a bipartisan solution.”
Garamendi has served as California’s 8th district representative since replacing Ellen Tauscher in 2009. Before his congressional tenure, he served in both the California State Assembly and Senate. He was born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and currently resides in Walnut Grove. Garamendi holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University.
