John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, has expressed concerns over several significant policy issues through his recent social media posts. Serving in Congress since 2009 after replacing Ellen Tauscher, Garamendi brings decades of experience from previous roles in the California State Assembly and Senate.
On May 13, 2025, Garamendi voiced his opposition to proposed budget cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by former President Donald Trump. He stated, “I have a problem — we all do. Trump wants to slash the EPA’s budget to its lowest level since it was created. That means severe harm across the U.S.” He emphasized the importance of preserving the agency with the message, “We can’t forget the core fight: the #EPA must survive.”
In another post on May 13, 2025, Garamendi shared a personal story from Marissa in Vallejo, CA about her son with Down syndrome participating in a workability program. Marissa described how her son found pride and happiness through his work at a soap-wrapping job for winery gift shops in Napa: “My son with down syndrome went into a workability program in Napa and was wrapping soaps for a company that sells soaps in winery gift shops. Our son would always come home happy.”
Further addressing social welfare concerns on May 13, 2025, Garamendi highlighted potential Republican-led cuts to Medicaid that could impact millions of Americans. Specifically mentioning Contra Costa and Solano Counties where “40% of residents rely on Medi-Cal,” he warned these reductions would particularly affect families and individuals with disabilities.
John Garamendi has been an advocate for environmental preservation and social welfare throughout his career. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945 and residing in Walnut Grove, he holds degrees from both UC Berkeley and Harvard University.
