John Garamendi, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, shared several tweets highlighting personal stories from his constituents who rely on Medicaid and Social Security benefits. These narratives underscore the importance of these programs for individuals with disabilities and their families.
On May 13, 2025, Garamendi posted a tweet about Ana from Suisun City, CA. She said, “I’m the conservator and caregiver of two adults with disabilities. They both receive Medi-Cal and Social Security survivor’s benefits. Medicaid allows them to live at home with me as their care provider. My niece is 46 years old. She has lived with me.”
Another tweet shared on the same day featured Wardine from Fairfield, CA, who recounted her challenges after sustaining injuries that led to multiple back surgeries. Wardine stated, “I got injured and I’ve had four back surgeries. I rely on Medicaid and Medicare. I take medication every day. Without Medicaid, I won’t be able to afford it. I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I am 100% disabled. I am devastated and scared of the horrible.”
In another tweet posted concurrently, Iris from Richmond, CA expressed concerns about potential funding cuts affecting her daughter’s autism services provided by Medi-Cal: “Tengo una hija con autismo, que recibe servicios de Medi-Cal, al recortar fondos, mi hija quedaría sin estos servicios y nosotros no podemos pagar, somos una familia de 6 con un solo ingreso, lo que implicaría un retrazo en el desarrollo de mi hija.”
John Garamendi has served in the U.S Congress since 2009 after replacing Ellen Tauscher. His previous roles include positions in the California State Assembly and Senate from 1974 to 1990.
