John Garamendi, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 8th district, shared a series of tweets on May 15, 2025, addressing recent developments involving former President Donald Trump and a substantial gift from Qatar. These tweets explore the implications and distinctions of this donation in relation to constitutional principles.
In his first tweet “On Sunday, May 11, the American people learned Trump was set to accept a $400 million jumbo jet from Qatar.” Garamendi highlighted that once Trump’s term concludes, the aircraft will be donated to the Trump Presidential Foundation Library for personal use. He urged followers to verify this claim with Trump’s Attorney General.
The second tweet “I’ve been hearing all week that Trump’s $400 million Qatari plane is the same as the Statue of Liberty.” saw Garamendi addressing comparisons between Trump’s jet and the Statue of Liberty. He introduced an upcoming thread intended to clarify why these two are distinct.
In his final tweet “So how is Trump’s Qatari plane different than the Statue of Liberty? The answer rests with the Emoluments Clause in the Constitution.”, he explained that any difference lies within constitutional constraints—specifically citing the Emoluments Clause.
John Garamendi has been serving in Congress since 2009 after replacing Ellen Tauscher. Born in Camp Blanding, Florida in 1945, he now resides in Walnut Grove and holds degrees from both UC Berkeley and Harvard University.
