John Garamendi, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing California's 8th district, addressed several issues via Twitter on April 9, 2025. Garamendi, who has served in various political capacities since the 1970s, expressed his concerns about recent developments in U.S. trade negotiations and domestic policy.

On April 9, 2025, Garamendi commented on former President Donald Trump's approach to tariff negotiations with U.S. allies, stating, "Donald Trump is opening tariff negotiations with our allies by saying, 'Kiss my ass.' I’d love to hear Secretary Pete Hegseth explain how that strengthens our alliances. I don’t expect a response—but I do expect him to do his job."

Later the same day, Garamendi advised against accepting what he termed as a "90-day pause" on tariffs. He claimed Trump's tariff policies would burden Americans financially, stating, "Don’t buy the 90-day pause. Trump’s reckless tariffs will raise costs by $4,600 a year for hardworking Americans. Instead of stopping them, House Republicans are voting today to approve them and continue this unnecessary trade war."

In another tweet that day, Garamendi voiced his concerns regarding Lee Zeldin’s environmental policies. He argued, "Lee Zeldin is siding with wealthy corporate polluters over the American people—raising costs, worsening pollution, and putting our health and climate at risk. That’s why I joined 180 of my colleagues to speak out and condemn his #PollutersFirst agenda."

John Garamendi has been a congressional representative for California since 2009, following Ellen Tauscher. He has a long history in politics, having served in the California state legislature, and holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University.
